They condemn the criminalization of animal rescuers

TL;DR

  • The Nevado Mission is denouncing the criminalization and harassment of animal rescuers who provide food to stray animals.
  • Legal professionals have published content criticizing rescuers, using an alarmist and biased discourse.
  • The Mission cites Article 127 of the Constitution, which mandates the protection of biodiversity and wildlife.
  • Feeding sentient animals is described as an act of preserving life, falling under the duty to protect biodiversity.
  • The premise that animal protection generates civil responsibilities is deemed a distortion of the law.
  • Promoting harassment against altruistic work violates the Venezuelan Lawyer's Code of Ethics.
  • The Nevado Mission will file a complaint with the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Bar Association of the Capital District.

The Nevado Mission issued a statement rejecting the criminalization and harassment of rescuers who provide food to stray animals, which is promoted on social media.

Through its Instagram account, the entity detailed that a few days ago legal professionals published an audiovisual material criticizing the work of rescuers who provide food to stray animals (especially cats), using an alarmist and biased discourse to discourage feeding these beings who are in a vulnerable situation in communities.

The Mission cited Article 127 of the Constitution, which mandates the protection of wildlife. “Article 127 is not a suggestion; it is a mandate that obligates both the State and its citizens to protect biodiversity. Feeding a sentient animal is an act of preserving life that falls within this higher duty,” the statement reads.

In that sense, they repudiated the premise promoted in the audiovisual, in which it is stated that animal protection generates civil responsibilities, which —the document emphasizes— constitutes a distortion of the law.

“We firmly believe that the practice of law must serve justice and social peace. Promoting harassment against those who perform altruistic work violates the fundamental principles of dignity, decorum, and truthfulness established in the Venezuelan Lawyer's Code of Ethics,” the publication states.

That is why the Nevado Mission reported that it will file a complaint with the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Bar Association of the Capital District so that this situation can be investigated as soon as possible.
