Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said Thursday that his country is willing to engage in dialogue with the United States without pressure and on the basis of mutual respect.
In statements to national and international media, he affirmed that "Cuba is willing to engage in dialogue with the United States, a dialogue on any of the topics that one wishes to discuss or talk about."
The president noted that this dialogue must be "without pressure" and "without preconditions," and expressed his desire that it take place "on equal footing," respecting Cuba's sovereignty and without interfering in its internal affairs.
Cuba is not a threat to the US
Díaz-Canel emphasized that Cuba does not pose a threat to the United States, stating that the Caribbean nation is "a country of peace." "We Cubans do not hate the American people; we recognize the values of the American people," he said.
He added that there are a number of issues between the two nations on which they can work together "without prejudice"; and clarified that the national military doctrine is exclusively for defending the sovereignty and independence of the country, and does not foresee "at any time" aggression against another State.
The president explained that Washington combines economic strangulation with the threat of military aggression. “We have been aware of this theory of economic strangulation for 67 years of the revolution, with the emergence of the blockade. All generations of Cubans, from the early years of the revolution to the present day, have lived under the blockade and were born under the signs of this economic hardship. We have always faced shortages and complex difficulties,” he added.
He emphasized that they have had to operate amidst vicissitudes, impositions and pressures "that are not imposed on anyone in the world, much less in such a prolonged manner."
"The energy persecution, the financial persecution, the intensification of the blockade with these coercive measures is such that we know we have to do a very strong, very creative, very intelligent job to overcome all these obstacles," he stated.
Cuba is not a terrorist country
He recalled that Cuba is not a terrorist country and that its inclusion on that list, "without any proof" by the US, was "a totally coercive and pressure tactic."
"Cuba is not a terrorist country, nor is Cuba a threat to the security of the United States. Cuba has never carried out, proposed, or armed any aggressive action that would endanger the territorial integrity, security, or stability of the United States government," he emphasized.
The Cuban president warned that Havana is aware of plans for aggression being prepared in Washington against the island and promised to provide the corresponding information in due course. He questioned, "How can a country that has been a victim of terrorism speak of terrorism in Cuba?" and described these accusations against his country as "manipulation, lies, and slander."
Solidarity in the world
Díaz-Canel emphasized that the country has received expressions of solidarity in the face of US threats. "Spokespeople from foreign ministries, political parties, embassies, international leaders, movements of countries, Democratic members of Congress, and members of the European Parliament," he said, referring to authorities from Mexico, Russia, China, and others.
"I can assure you, with a full sense of responsibility, that Cuba is not alone," he guaranteed, explaining that there are people, governments, countries, institutions, and companies that are willing to work with Cuba.
He also highlighted that with Venezuela, "a whole relationship of cooperation and collaboration was woven with a principle of solidarity and complementarity, like two brother countries," which was strengthened over the years in various areas.
Unity among peoples
He added that people must understand that the world is facing "a war that is political, that is ideological, a war" that also has a cultural, communicational and media component.
He called on the nations of the Global South to seek coordination and unity, which cannot be merely rhetorical, but must also involve action and constant denunciation. He also urged them to seek integration into blocs on a common front, defending their ideas, as well as economic, trade, and cooperative actions to uphold multilateralism.
