They are testing the planting of 11 varieties of sunflower in Guárico

In the heart of Guárico state, the Rómulo Gallegos National Experimental University (Unerg) has transformed approximately 300 square meters into a field draped in yellow, watched over by the imposing San Juan hills. This is the first agronomic validation trial (Evac) of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivars, a strategic initiative to determine the adaptation of this crop to the plains region.

TL;DR

  • Unerg is testing 11 sunflower varieties in a 300 plot to assess their adaptability to Guárico state.
  • The project aims to diversify Guárico's agricultural production from cereals to oilseeds, specifically sunflowers.
  • The goal is to establish Guárico as a producer of vegetable fats and oils.
  • Supported by Conasem and Inia, the trial evaluates genetics for yield and climate resilience.
  • Potential average yield is 3,000 kg per hectare for the evaluated cultivars.
  • The research includes analyzing soil properties, pest incidence, and genetic resistance.
  • Unerg also has ongoing projects for mung bean validation and sheep/goat herd production.
  • The largest sunflower producers in Venezuela are Portuguesa, Cojedes, and Yaracuy.
