Foro Penal is a non-governmental organization dedicated, for more than 23 years, to the free legal defense and assistance of victims of human rights violations in Venezuela. During this time, we have provided legal and human support to more than 14,000 people and their families, without any discrimination.
Our commitment to justice, peace, and the rule of law has always been based on the Constitution, the law, and international human rights treaties.
We categorically reject any attempt to link us with acts of violence, much less with activities that could be described as terrorist. Neither our organization, nor its directors, nor our thousands of volunteers nationwide have any connection with facts or organizations of that nature.
We observe with concern the use of discourses that criminalize or stigmatize the legitimate work of human rights defense. These types of accusations not only affect Foro Penal, but also other sister organizations such as Provea, among others, which have been equally unfairly attacked. We express our solidarity with them and reaffirm our respect and admiration for their work.
The free exercise of the work of human rights organizations is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society and benefits all citizens, regardless of their ideology or political affiliation. Even those who currently hold power benefit from the existence of a strong, active civil society committed to respect for fundamental rights.
We will remain firm in our work, motivated by the trust of those who have turned to us for support, and by our unwavering conviction that the defense of human rights must not be criminalized.
