Nurse Alex Pretti was inspired to protest against ICE in Minneapolis after a federal agent from this agency fatally shot Renee Nicole Good on January 7, 2026. Alex had read the poem Alchemy by this American poet.
The poet Renée Nicole Good wrote a poem titled Alchemy in which she describes ships, oceans, and lighthouses as metaphors for resilience and self-transformation. For her, the idea of turning wounds (old wounds) in tools (sails) suggests an alchemical process of pain transformed into strength. The poetic voice of this woman who fought for the common causes of humanity redefines itself, moving from struggle (drowning) to reconnecting with their own essence (teaching my blood how to become seaLet's read his poem Alchemy: “I am learning to hold myself like a sinking ship—with gentle hands, with the knowledge that even vessels filled with water can still float.”*.* I am stitching my own sails from the threads of old wounds, dyeing them crimson with the ink of forgiveness. There is an ocean in my chest that once knew only storms, but now I am building lighthouses from the bones of broken things. Do you see? I am not drowning anymore. I am teaching my blood how to become sea—how to taste like salt and freedom, how to surrender to the moon without losing myself to the tide. I am the map and the territory, the compass always pointing toward home.
On January 24, 2026, Alex Jeffrey Pretti was killed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both he and Good were victims of the current Slave Catcher gangs, an organized and legally sanctioned system in the United States before the Civil War (1865), dedicated to capturing escaped enslaved people and kidnapping free Black people to sell into slavery. Both Pretti and Good were 37 years old; their blood today becomes the sea, tasting of salt and freedom.
